چکیده

The diffusion and coarsening of two-dimensional homoepitaxial islands on Cu(100) and Ag(100) surfaces have been studied at room temperature with time-sequenced scanning tunneling microscopy. Quantitative analyses of the dependence of island diffusion coefficient D vs the island side length L, D ~ L , yield noninteger scaling exponents which are consistent with island coalescence. Moreover, the near absence of island decay shows that the island diffusion occurs via mass transport along the island periphery. [S0031-9007(97)04302-0]

INFLUENCE OF THE ELECTROCHEMICAL ENVIRONMENT ON DIFFUSION PROCESSES NEAR STEP AND ISLAND EDGES: Ag(111) and Ag(100)

The electrochemical cell provides a potentially powerful means of altering morphology and islanding phenomena on metallic surfaces. Diffusion and attachment processes on terraces and near step and island edges are known to profoundly affect island sizes, shapes and coarsening kinetics. Using the surface-embedded-atom-model (SEAM) for describing metallic surfaces in the electrolytic environment,...

Coarsening of Two-Dimensional Nanoclusters on Metal Surfaces

We describe experimental observations and theoretical analysis of the coarsening of distributions of twodimensional nanoclusters, either adatom islands or vacancy pits, on metal surfaces. A detailed analyses is provided for Ag(111) and Ag(100) surfaces, although we also discuss corresponding behavior for Cu(111) and Cu(100) surfaces. The dominant kinetic pathway for coarsening can be either Ost...

INFLUENCE OF THE ELECTROCHEMICAL POTENTIAL ON ENERGY LANDSCAPES NEAR STEP AND ISLAND EDGES: Ag(100) and Ag(111)

The electrochemical cell offers the promise of enabling controlled alteration of the morphology and islanding phenomena on metallic surfaces. Different diffusion processes near step and island edges are known to profoundly affect the growth mode, island sizes, island shapes and step morphology. Using the surface-embedded-atom-model (SEAM) modified for the electrolytic environment, we calculate ...

Coarsening mechanisms in a metal film: From cluster diffusion to vacancy ripening.

Coarsening of Ag films on Ag(100) at room temperature occurs primarily via diffusion-mediated coalescence of two-dimensional adatom clusters, rather than by Ostwald ripening, up to a coverage of 0.65 monolayer. Above 0.8 monolayer, vacancy clusters coarsen primarily via Ostwald ripening, due to their much lower diffusivity. An asymmetric transition region separates these two regimes, characteri...

Mechanisms of mound coarsening in unstable epitaxial growth

Corner diffusion is shown to play a crucial role in determining the asymptotic mound coarsening exponent n in the case of unstable epitaxial growth on (001) and (111) surfaces. For the case of island-relaxation without corner diffusion the asymptotic exponent is found to satisfy n.1/4. However, when rapid cornerdiffusion is allowed, the coarsening exponent is found to approach 1/3. An explanati...
